Beyond the Technical: How We Define Exceptional

The 4Cs – Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut – are the universal language of diamond and gemstone quality. At Luminesse, we embrace this standard as a foundation, but our selection philosophy goes further. We choose stones that are not merely certified but beautiful, and we guide you to understand what each C means for your unique piece.

Carat Weight

Carat measures a stone’s weight, not its physical size. Two stones of equal carat weight can appear slightly different in dimensions depending on cut proportions. Our design team helps you understand how carat weight translates visually in your chosen setting, ensuring the scale feels balanced on your hand or neck. With lab-grown stones, you can often choose a more generous carat weight without the exponential price increase of mined gems.

Color

For white diamonds, we select stones in the near-colorless to colorless range (D–G on the GIA scale), where no perceptible yellow tint is visible to the naked eye. For fancy-color diamonds and colored gemstones, the standard inverts: we seek stones with the most vivid, saturated, and evenly distributed hue. Our lab-grown sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are handpicked for their exceptional color richness, a judgment made by eye and heart, not only by grade.

Clarity

Clarity assesses the presence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes. We select diamonds that are eye-clean – meaning no inclusions are visible without magnification. For colored gemstones, we embrace a balanced approach: some inclusions can be evidence of natural crystal growth (even in lab-grown stones), and we prioritize character and luminosity over flawlessness.

Cut

Cut is the human contribution to a stone’s beauty – and we consider it the most critical C. A masterfully cut stone reflects light from every facet, delivering brilliance, fire, and scintillation. We work with multi-generational cutting ateliers in China’s premier gemstone centers, where artisans apply exacting angles and polish to every facet. Whether a round brilliant, an emerald cut, or a bespoke fantasy shape, our cut quality is non-negotiable.

The Luminesse Fifth C: Consciousness

We ask one more question of every stone we source: How was it brought into being, and at what cost? Our diamonds and gemstones are 100% lab-grown. Our metals are recycled where possible. Our production is made to order. This is the Consciousness standard – and it underpins everything we create.
